This is an updated edition of my memoir released in April 2018. It’s a brutally honest look at my journey so far, my relationships, what motivates me and the strategies I’ve used to overcome all my challenges. It also includes chapters written by my family, Michael, his parents and my close friends.

About Unmasked

It’s been five years since Turia Pitt made headlines for having barely survived her ordeal in the desert. And in that time, she has become one of the most inspirational women in Australia.

Whether via the numerous media reports, 60 Minutes specials, Women’s Weekly cover stories or her first book, Everything To Live For, we know about the why, how and what of that fateful day in September 2011. We know how she died four times on the operating table and her tortuous road to recovery. We’ve had a glimpse of the love of her boyfriend, Michael, that sustained her, and seen hints of the inner-strength that has made her one of the most admired women in the country. But until now, the true essence of this most remarkable Australian, plus the toll her accident has all taken on her and those around her, have remained a mystery.

How and why does she push herself to ever greater physical and mental limits? What does she see when she looks in the mirror? How does her sudden celebrity (for the most unorthodox of reasons) sit with her? What lessons has she learned in the past five years? And, crucially, how can each and every one of us take those lessons and apply them to our own lives?

More than a simple chronology of events – and against the backdrop of a never-ending series of impressive physical feats, including climbing the Great Wall of China, walking the Kokoda Track and competing in not one but two Ironman competitions – this book unmasks the real Turia: funny, fierce, intelligent, flawed.

With the benefit of hindsight and five years’ worth of getting of wisdom, Turia is only now able to account for how she prevailed where others might have faltered. And for the first time, in this book we get to know the people who – by Turia’s own admission – made her recovery possible.

Unmasked will reveal the woman behind the headlines, and in so doing, uncover the grace, humour and inner-steel that gets Turia Pitt through every day – and which leaves the rest of us watching on in amazement.

If you only read 1 book this year – make it this one.
An extraordinary and inspiring woman with a very simple message – challenge yourself to see what you are made of!

After finishing unmasked I asked my husband to read it because there are so many great values and attitudes to learn from you and the wonderful people in your life.
I asked him to read it because I thought if we could be more motivated and develop a better healthier attitude to life, we could be the parents we need to be for our children and hopefully raise strong, beautiful children who have the confidence to tackle what life throws at them.

in the 1st few chapters, I couldn’t stop my tears coming down on each and every page. My hair got soaked (cos I was reading while lying down). Anyway. Thank you. It has really been so inspiring and such a testament to the great love you have in your life and your courage, sheer mental toughness and rising above seemingly impossible challenges, against all odds…..it’s incredible.

This book is a gift to the world. I got it today and have read half already. … hearing about injury from your perspective and your honesty and your realness is a gift! As a registered nurse you are helping me to see things differently to see positivity in negativity and I can not tell you how much relief I have felt reading your words. Thank you.

Reading books can be an incredible way of challenging our own thinking, and without a doubt, Turia’s determination, courage and bravery is so inspiring.
The message that I have taken away from her story is that with resiliance and mental fortitude, anything is possible to achieve.

I was obsessed with your story and read your book in a couple of days. I think made a mistake of taking it along to a book club I belong to with a bunch of pretty cool women, raved on about you and now it has been lost to the line up of ladies waiting to read it too!
I actually wanted to have it back right away to let my 10 & 11 year old daughters read it.

  7. Karen

I bought Unmasked today … and read it cover to cover. I didn’t mean to.
I had planned to start the book this afternoon and see how I’d go. I didn’t move from the couch until I’d read the last word. What a read!

If you want to be challenged to live life to the full and do more than you think you’re capable of then read this gem!
Such an inspiring, amazing lady! A story of resilience, positivity, determination and the power of love.

Turia’s words will stay with me forever.
Anything is possible if you put in the work.

I cannot put Turia’s book down. I am on chapter 16 by the second day. This book is raw, emotional, witty and thought provoking. I love how we get to hear from everyone that has been involved in Turia’s journey and how frank and open everyone is about the amazing determination but also the dark times.
This book has given me the kick to break my barriers and rubbish excuses and go for what I want. Life is for living. You don’t need a reason to read this book, it is a must read.

  11. Kelly

Definitely a must read that’s made it to the top of my faves list.

If you’re looking for something inspiring to read, look no further.

From the first chapter, I shed tears. They stayed throughout, but mixed with smiles, chuckles and ‘wow’ moments.

My husband commented, “Are you still crying?” I was up to chapter twelve and had a box of tissues next to me, my head in the book.

This is an inspirational read; not only because of what happened to Turia, but what she did about it. It’s not just about Turia. The people around her show wonderful human spirit and love, particularly her fiancé Michael. Inspiring love flows through the pages.
