How to instantly shift your perspective

By April 26, 20183 Comments

Hey champ,

Have you picked up on a slight theme behind my blogs this month?

For the past few weeks, I’ve been talking about different ways to change your perspective. Whether that’s changing the way you understand what people say to you, what you could do with your life if fear wasn’t in the picture, or how you’re potentially viewing your life inside a relationship.

Perspective. It’s everything.

And today, I want to share the most simple and effective way of shifting yours:

Helping someone.

A few weeks ago, I found out that my friend’s Mum was sick.  So I packaged up some of my favourite books and sent them to her.

A really simple thing, right? But it made her day … and it also made mine.

I’m not telling you this to get a pat on the back. I’m telling you this because I want you to go and help someone too. This week, or even better, today.

It doesn’t have to be an expensive, grandiose gesture. It could be giving a loved book to someone bed-bound and in need of a fictional escape. It could be minding your sister’s kids so she can do the grocery shop in peace. It might be cooking dinner or hand-delivering flowers to a friend going through a hard time.

Whatever way you can, I want you to go and help someone.

And the reason why is simple: helping someone else shifts your perspective. It stops you from thinking about yourself for a moment.

Now I’m not calling you self-obsessed – it’s just that we all get wrapped up in our own lives. Our own fears, worries, To Do lists, chores, work. It’s normal.

But stepping outside of your life for a moment, even for five minutes, shifts your focus away from yourself.

You’ll come back to your own life and see it in a different light.

And that’s always a good thing.

The simplest way of changing your life has nothing to do with you, and everything to do with the way you help others.  Tweet it!

So that’s it today. Not a long essay, not a pen-to-paper activity, just a challenge.

Go and help someone.

And let me know how it helps shift your perspective too. Let me know in the comments below.
